- ASIAN CALLIGRAPHY
Asian calligraphy and Asian painting goes hand in hand to represent the universe and the Chinese view of the universe.
It has history of over 2000 years and has been in practice to this date in China, Japan and Korea. Originally, it was the writing Chinese ideograms using a brush. It is still used for the same purpose to write documents, but now there are more artistic, and philosophic meanings in it. One may wonder why in this year and age of rapid communication by electronic means and computer we need it.
As one start to grind Sumi block on the stone plate, he/she will begin to notice calming of one's breathing, and as he/she begin to draw first line on the while rice paper, one will notice settling down of one's mind and sharp concentration.
In every symbol one writes, there is meaning, and every line one draws, there is artistic panache. At times one feels power, other times one sees graceful dance, another times, one hears wind.
Besides Chinese and Korean characters, writing alphabet will be tried.
There will be different level of classes. A free workshop is open from July 2003 on every Fridays.
Those interested, call (732) 246-7066 and ask for Julia Im.
